2017-2019 Learning Fair: Disasters
This year’s Learning Fair is a research project focusing on disasters. Students will choose a topic that interests them and use their research to write a paper as well as design a backboard which will be displayed at our annual Learning Fair. The project will count as the third trimester exam grade in Language Arts and Science and an assessment in Math. Students will be guided through the process of researching, notetaking, outlining, writing, and citing a well-written paper. Further instructions will be given for the requirements of the backboard as the Learning Fair approaches.
Sources
A minimum of five (5) sources is required. This can include electronic, printed (book, magazine, newspaper) and/or television media.
The Research Paper
The research paper must be 2-3 pages and will be done in school and independently. It will answer the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when, why) and how. A good research paper will thoroughly and accurately convey facts with ample supporting detail. Complete papers will follow the MLA format and include:
* An electronic copy of the paper is required. All research papers will be scanned for academic integrity. Plagiarism (academic integrity) will result in an after school detention as well as the immediate failure of the research paper portion of the Learning Fair.
Due Dates
Due dates will be posted on Mrs. Chudy’s and Mrs. Piedmonte’s websites as well as written in the student’s agenda.
We hope for success as well as enjoyment in this project.

Neatness goes a long way in the project. When cutting make sure the edges are straight and attractive.
Color – Color can make a big difference in your presentation. You want your work to stand out. You can use colored paper behind your pictures or captions. The backboard could be colored by some means, crayon, paint, or paper or you can purchase a colored backboard.
Placement- The placement of visual objects helps to further explain your event so consider the size of your pictures, captions, and size/type of fonts. Stand back and look before you glue your material on the backboard.

You will be following the attached template to ensure all parts of the project are included. This project should be explained to the audience as if they have no idea about your topic.
- There are six major parts to the project. These include; the cause, early warning signs, a catchy title, what happened/timeline, the results of disaster, and preventions now in place. Each part of the board needs to be titled. Please see attached backboard template.
Left side of Backboard will include:
- Cause of disaster – What was the cause of your disaster? Explain how a tornado is created, a hurricane develops, or a volcano erupts (include pictures and diagrams). What happened to cause your disaster?
- Early warning signs –What are some of the warning signs that lead up to your disaster? (communication, newspaper, radio, word of mouth, technology, recordkeeping, historical data, alerts) Were they prepared for the disaster? (include pictures and diagrams)
Center of Backboard will include:
- Catchy title of your event as well as a picture of the globe showing where the event happened and of the disaster with a short caption explaining it. This area should draw the viewer’s attention.
- What happened? –You will present the damage caused by your natural disaster, pictures and or diagrams must be included and explained. This should be presented as part of your timeline. It should include a starting and finishing point using between seven and ten events within the disaster. The unit of time can be measured in minutes, hours, and or days.
Right side of Backboard will include:
- Results of disaster – What was the response to the disaster, and how was its severity assessed? How many were affected? Was there an evacuation? Could your disaster be recorded? How was it rated? (include pictures and diagrams)
- Preventions now in place – What has changed in order to prevent future loss of life? Where there any policy changes? Are there new responses or ways to prepare for future disasters? Are there any new warning systems in place or have they updated the old warning systems?
- The “WOW” Factor – Think of this as the advertisement for your project. How will you present it so people will stop and look at what you have presented?
This is your chance to use your creativity to make your project standout.
