Summer Reading: Grade 8
During the summer, incoming eighth grade students are required to read the following book and complete the following assignments which are due Friday, September 6.
Assignment 1: Read I Am the Cheese by Robert Cormier.
Students are expected to type a minimum of 10 or more detailed bulleted notes for every six chapters (more is always better). These do not need to be in full sentences. Students should include such elements as settings, characters, plot, and conflict. In turn, these notes will be used while taking an assessment that will be given within the first month of school. The notes will also be subject to teacher review and graded.
Assignment 2: Vocabulary
In addition, students must find 20 unfamiliar vocabulary words. Write the word, part of speech from the context of the sentence, the definition, and the sentence in which the word is used. Please underline the word and write the page number where it was found in the book. This must be typed on a separate page from the bulleted notes and will also be graded.
But he remembered asking his father why all these precautions with Mr. Grey were
necessary ten years after the testimony and threats. p. 162
.
Assignment 3: Make a test of your own.
Students are expected to create a 20 question test based on the following elements: character(s), setting(s), plot, and type of conflict(s). Please be sure to vary your questions to include all of these elements. The test must include: 5 multiple choice, 5 true/false, 5 fill-in-the-blank, and 5 short answer questions. Make your questions challenging.
Your test must be typed and have the correct answers filled in. (You make it and take it.) Follow all instructions for the assignment carefully.
