2018-2019 Learning Fair: Living Things
The 2018-2019 Grade 7-1 Learning Fair project will involve Science, Language Arts, and Math. Since the focus of 7th grade science is Life Science, the topic of the project will be living things (organisms). Students will begin by choosing a living thing and submitting their idea to Mr. Van at the scheduled time. Remember that living things include plants and animals, but there are living things that are neither plants nor animals. (See pages 760-764 of the Glencoe Life Science book). The project will focus on five sub-topics- how the living thing gets energy (eats or makes its own food), adapts to its environment (stays warm in cold areas, stays hydrated in dry areas), exchanges gases (with lungs, gills, etc.), moves (animals) or grows (plants), and reproduces (how offspring are born in animals or seeds spread in plants).
According to attached rubrics, the project will be graded as a Trimester 3 Science Exam grade. The grade will consist of 40 points for a research paper, 40 points for a backboard, and 20 points for a model of the organism. We will try to avoid having two 7-1 students working on a project about the same living thing. There is a large section of books about living things in the school library, but other sources can be used. A portion of the backboard (center bottom) will also be used for a Math component for Mrs. Piedmonte.
The Language Arts portion of the Learning Fair will be graded as Language Arts Trimester 3 exam grade and requires a research paper. A minimum of six (6) sources is required. This can include electronic, printed (book, magazine, and/or newspaper), and/or videos and television media. The research paper will be divided into five sections, namely, how the living thing adapts to the environment, moves or grows, gets energy, reproduces and exchanges gases. Each section requires two or more well-written paragraphs. The paper must be 2-3 pages. Research will be done in school and independently.
A good research paper will thoroughly and accurately convey facts with ample supporting detail. Complete papers will follow the MLA format and include:
* An electronic copy of the paper is required. All research papers will be scanned for academic integrity. Plagiarism (academic integrity) will result in an after school detention as well as the immediate failure of the research paper portion of the Learning Fair.
Due dates will be posted on Mr. VanOrsouw’s and Mrs. Chudy’s websites as well as written in the student’s agenda.
We hope for your success with and enjoyment of this project. Please do not hesitate to see us with any questions you may have. Parents can E-mail questions to [email protected] , [email protected] , or [email protected].
